Bedford Chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees picnic scheduled for Aug. 10 at Shawnee State Park has been canceled. Everett Area High School Class of 1982’s 40th year class reunion will be held at the American Legion Home Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. Reservations are due by Aug. 1 by calling 814-977-4996.

Bedford County Pink Ribbon Fund will host a “Launch Party” on Sept. 17 at the Bedford Elks Club. The launch party is held prior to the Breast Cancer Awareness Walk in the fall. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with food stations opening at 6 p.m. Beginning at 7 p.m., the “Flying Ivories” will perform on dueling pianos that deliver an all request sing-a-long that’s part music and part comedy. Cost to attend is $30 per person. Tickets can be purchased at Founders Crossing in Bedford, Edward Jones in Everett or from any Pink Ribbon Fund board member. The Bedford County Pink Fund is a non-profit organization that provides support for women and men in their battles against breast cancer.

Bloody Run Historical Society will meet at 6 p.m. on Aug. 1 at the Station Museum. Barb Miller’s historical exhibit at the Everett Free Library in August will feature the story of “Murder on Main Street.” On Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. at the Everett High School auditorium, there will be a viewing of the video “Forgotten Heroes,” the Robert Hartsock story. Admission will be free; donations are appreciated. The society and the Everett Area Alumni Association are sponsoring the event.

Chicken barbecue dinners will be served pre-order and take-out only style from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Cumberland Valley Township Fire Hall, 4344 Bedford Valley Road, Bedford. Everett Free Library has announced a schedule of events. Dottie Elder, nutrition education adviser with Penn State Extension, will lead a six-week workshop, “Enjoy Healthy Eating on a Tight Budget,” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. each Thursday, Aug. 4 through Sept. 8, and will teach participants about portion sizes, meal planning and preparation, food safety, smart shopping, healthy eating tips and more. Community members are 55 and older may attend to socialize, relax and connect over sundaes (non-dairy available). Children’s activities will be provided for seniors bringing along grandchildren.

Chestnut Ridge tractor and wagon rides will be offered Aug. 27, starting at 10 a.m. at the Chestnut Ridge Independent Fellowship Church. Participants will view the area orchards during the 13-mile trip. A meal will be provided at the church following the ride. The rain date is Sept. 3.

Fishertown Ridgettes alumni and banner carriers can twirl or march in the Shawnee Valley Fireman’s Parade in Schellsburg on Sept. 1. Bedford Area Photography Club is hosting an online photography contest and is accepting Town Planner calendar photography submissions. The club’s contest has three categories: people, nature and open. Photo entries in these categories are not limited to Bedford County and can be taken from any location. Cash prizes will be awarded in each subject. All photos entered will be displayed on the Bedford Area Photo Club Facebook page beginning Sept. 1. Deadline for entries is July 31. The calendar submissions must be images of landscapes in Bedford County. A $100 award will be given for the cover photo. Visit the photography club’s Facebook page for more information.

Shawnee Valley Fire Company Community Auxiliary will host a chicken barbecue July 30, with pickup from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Shawnee Valley Fire Hall. Each meal will consist of one-half chicken, two sides, roll and a bottle of water. Cost will be $12. The meals will be prepared by The Chick’n Wagon. There will be a limited number of extra meals available.

Everett Lions Club will sponsor a Night of Racing fundraiser to support the Weicht/Hartsock Medal of Honor statue on the corner of Main and Hopewell streets. The races will take place on Oct. 15 at Down River Golf Course beginning at 7 p.m. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for anyone wishing to eat beforehand. There will be 10 races and a special auction race, all previously recorded around the country and shown on video screens. Participants can “buy” and name a horse for $25. Horse tickets get one admission to the event. Jockeys are also available for sale for $25, although seating is limited for the ticket. Horse and jockey ticket holders win $50. During the event, attendees can bet a minimum of $2 per race on their favorite horse or horses in the lineup, with cash prizes for the winners. The Lions are also seeking program business and individual patrons for $10 to support the statue project, and horse and jockey sponsors are available for $50. There are only 100 horse tickets available for admission.

Bedford County Garden Club will host a National Garden Club Horticulture specialty show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 3 at the Bedford Presbyterian Church. The event is free and open to the public to attend or enter. Categories will include flowering annuals, perennials and biennials, decorative perennial foliage, bulb flowers, hostas, herbs, flowering container grown plants, foliage container grown plants, combination plantings, arboreal, or vegetables. Bedford County Vietnam Veterans Association meets at the Landmark Restaurant for breakfast at 9 a.m. on the first and third Thursday and for a meeting at 5 p.m. on the last Thursday.

Bedford Lions Club meets at 6 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays at the Bedford American Legion.
